From the first English settlement in the New World, to the hideouts of Blackbeard the pirate, OBX has noteworthy roots. It can even boast as the birthplace of aviation, with the Wright Brothers first taking flight from the dunes of Kitty Hawk!

Topsail Island (pronounced TOP-sil) is a 26-mile-long vacation spot off the coast of North Carolina near Wilmington. It’s home to the communities of North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach. Visitors enjoy the patches of maritime forests — and, of course, the beautiful beaches. History buffs love the area’s links to the Navy’s World War II missile-testing project, called Operation Bumblebee…not to mention legends of marauding pirates hiding their ships along its shores.
